3 Tips To Help Kids Stay Focused Until Winter Break

Teachers and families are more aware than ever before of the need of collaborating to promote our children' development. Teachers and families have worked together over the previous several months to overcome significant difficulties and successes in order to make this school year exceptionally enjoyable for children. We've officially begun the drive until students, teachers, and families get a well-earned vacation over the holidays and into the new year.
In my eight years of teaching and leadership, I've found that December presents kids with distinct distractions. We all like the festive spirit of the season, but it also means that pupils begin to fall behind academically in preparation for the forthcoming Christmas break. Here are three classroom strategies that families may find useful at home to help kids remain focused between now and the Christmas break so we don't waste any important learning time:

CENTER YOUR ENTHUSIASM ON ACADEMICS

Our school community likes to state that in December, we will maximize instructional time with our children and celebrate their academic progress. Our students want for challenging and entertaining classes that enable them to demonstrate their knowledge and enhance their genius. At home, the same is true. Your youngster will imitate your behavior. Spend time together talking about what they did at school that day. Inquire if they can show you something they've produced or explain something they've learnt. Allow them to act as a teacher to you so that they are confident and enthused about their studies.

INCLUDE LEARNING IN YOUR HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

Of all, even while studying, we can't—and shouldn't!—ignore the joys of the festive season all around us. That is why we offer a full schedule of holiday-themed events linked to our classroom studies at KIPP Royalty Academy. For example, we started December by making ornaments for our class Christmas trees and naming the shapes using Kindergarten KIPPsters. We also had a "World of Celebrations" day, when we learnt about how other countries, such as Germany, Iceland, China, Brazil, and the Philippines, celebrate their holidays. Try something similar with your children, such as learning arithmetic skills while creating a beloved family cake recipe or making a sight word game out of visiting to view Christmas lights in your area.

DISCUSS THE BEST KIND OF GIFT: YOUR CHILDREN'S.

I am the principal of a KIPP public charter school, where we believe that every kid comes with gifts: talent, perspective, passion, and inspiration. It's difficult to compete with the incessant TV advertising and packed gifts beckoning your kid to open them this time of year, but you can assist your youngster remain thrilled about their own gifts. When kids express appreciation, describe their feelings, or ask an inquisitive inquiry about the world around them, give them positive reinforcement. Remind them of how well they do in their preferred topics. Remind them of their personal progress as well; ask them about a particular example of something they used to struggle with but now enjoy. Spend time performing their favorite educational activities as a family.

Together, we can maintain high learning and personal development goals so that our kids can hit the ground running in 2022 after a joyful and relaxing holiday.
