This autumn, Maryland County will be the first system in the D.C. region to return to remote instruction.

As coronavirus infections rise and schools in the Washington area limit student activities, students in Prince George's County will transition from in-person classrooms to virtual learning until mid-January.

Monica E. Goldson, the superintendent of Maryland's second-largest school district, announced the adjustment Friday afternoon, noting a "significant increase" in instances as she lay out a plan for students to return to in-person classrooms after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on January 18.
The move is the first substantial transition to remote teaching by a large public school system in the D.C. region this school year, and it will certainly disappoint parents hoping for a more conventional learning experience in 2021-2022.

However, several school districts have recently reported a considerable increase in illnesses. Goldson had previously described the pattern as disturbing, stating that a week before, the two-day total had been less than 100 instances, compared to a high of 155 cases in one day this week.
