Sat Jan 08, 2022 4:34 am
"We have a lot of ground to make up in New Mexico because we spent years without proper expenditures in education," said Nora Meyers Sackett, press secretary for the Governor's Office.
The proposed budget for fiscal year 2023 includes $200 million in salary increases as part of regaining ground. There would be a 7% increase in education workers. Teachers in the three-tier system would enjoy a 20 percent pay raise, with basic salaries of $50,000, $60,000, and $70,000, respectively. According to Meyers Sackett, they will be the highest teacher wages in the region.
"It's critical to concentrate on both drawing fresh eager New Mexico students to the profession, as well as attracting teachers to New Mexico and maintaining the excellent hardworking competent teachers we now have in our schools," she says.
