The National Press and Publication Administration informed state-run news outlet Xinhua that game play will be limited to the hours of 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
It also told game firms that minors should not be allowed to play outside of certain hours.
Online games were recently dubbed "spiritual opium" by a state-run news source.
Inspections of online gaming firms will also be increased, according to the regulator, to ensure that the time restrictions are adhered to.
Previously, children were only allowed to play internet games for 90 minutes each day, with three hours allowed on weekends and holidays.
