Apple Censors Engraving Service, Report Claims
Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:56 am
According to a source, Apple bans references to Chinese leaders, dissidents, and other themes in its engraving service.
Citizen Lab said it looked at filters used by customers who wanted something etched on their new iPhone, iPad, or other Apple product.
Not only in mainland China, but also in Hong Kong and Taiwan, Apple had a long list of words that were forbidden.
The engraving service also avoided copyrighted statements as well as those that "are profane or culturally offensive, may be perceived as inciting violence, or would be banned according to local laws, norms, and regulations."
Apple, on the other hand, is accused by CitizenLab of having "carelessly and inconsistently curated keyword lists."
